hiding in plain sight

spring 2014 thesis project

I was interested in perspectives in architecture and how to design from perspectives and therefore, the design of perception. Optical illusions were studied to create three-dimensional spaces that are physically the same yet perceptually different. Black and white colors were used as a high contrast tool to deceive the eye while stripes were used to create a repetition of patterns to provide depth. Various studies included translating 2D illusions into 3D and applying these tests into space and architecture. In such investigation, illusions were used as a commentary on the American suburbia; where every house looks similar and disorientating while the insides are completely different to reflect individualism. Thus, The illusions were applied so that the exterior are similar yet the interiors are completely different due to the usage of illusions. Each house is created to have the same physical shape with a plan of a retangular box yet due to the different patterns, each house is spatially different.

structural tone asia intern

summer 2011

This summer internship was with a general contracting company called Structure Tone Asia in Hong Kong where the project worked with the architecture firm Woods-Bagot in renovating the ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel. My involvement included in shadowing the drafters in field measurements, attending project meetings internally (and with the client, architect, and sub-contractors), as well as assisting in 3d services model. I was also involved in the production of shop drawings and reviewed, rectified, and coordinated drating errors with drafters. There was also compilation of material sbmissions documentations and created sample boards of materials.

vietnam complex tower

fall 2012

The concept for the Vietnam Complex project begins with the lotus and the abstraction of the lotus flower. This project was about the process and the steps that it took to lead to the final design. Like the flower where petal by petal it builds up into one, the building will build up from the bottom with a layering of curves. As these curves build up, it will open up into the high rise level of the hotel and apartment as it allows more transparency for lighting. The podium area will be layered with curves that contains slits in the roof for skylights but otherwise opaque for privacy. The exterior of the podium will be a layering of curves for the facade and where the curves open up will be entrances. As the curves go up, they will be less layered and spaced apart to allow for balconies for penthouses and other exterior spaces. The whole project was documented into a 100-page book.

echo park high school

spring 2012

The philosophy of the school is to break away from the conventional form of education. The building mass is created to fit into the neighborhood and then carved to break away from the static form. A series of dualism emerges of cultivating students but also sheltering them from the world, of protection but also a connection to the neighborhood and beyond. This connection is evident in the breaking points of circulation where appears a possibility to look beyond the school.
